چکیده

We consider a periodic-review single-location single-product inventory system with lost sales and positive replenishment lead times. It is well known that the optimal policy does not possess a simple structure. Motivated by recent results showing that base-stock policies perform well in these systems, we study the problem of finding the best base-stock policy in such a system. In contrast to the classical inventory literature, we assume that the manager does not know the demand distribution a priori, but must make the replenishment decision in each period based only on the past sales (censored demand) data. We develop a nonparametric adaptive algorithm that generates a sequence of order-up-to levels whose T -period running average of the inventory holding and lost sales penalty cost converges to the cost of the optimal base-stock policy at the rate of O(1/T ). Our analysis is based on recent advances in stochastic online convex optimization and on the uniform ergodicity of Markov chains associated with bases-stock policies. ∗Department of Industrial Engineering and Operations Research, Columbia University, New York, NY 10027, USA. Closing the Gap: A Learning Algorithm for the Lost-Sales Inventory System with Lead Times

Introduction The periodic-review inventory control problem with lost-sales and positive lead times is one of the most fundamental yet notoriously difficult problems in the theory of inventory management (see Zipkin (2000)). The model assumes that unmet demand at the end of each period is lost, rather than being backlogged and carried over to the next period. For example, in many retail applicat...

Optimization of two-stage production/inventory systems under order base stock policy with advance demand information

It is important to share demand information among the members in supply chains. In recent years, production and inventory systems with advance demand information (ADI) have been discussed, where advance demand information means the information of demand which the decision maker obtains before the corresponding actual demand arrives. Appropriate production and inventory control using demand info...

Asymptotic Optimality of Order-Up-To Replenishment Policies for Serial Inventory Systems with Lost Sales

We study the optimal policy for a serial inventory system under periodic review when excess demand at the retailer (i.e., the most downstream stage) is lost. We focus on “high service level environments” (i.e., systems where the cost of a lost sale is high compared to inventory holding costs). These environments are typical of products whose margins are high relative to their holding costs. Whe...

A Non-Parametric Approach to Stochastic Inventory Planning with Lost Sales and Censored Demand

We study stochastic inventory planning systems with lost sales and censored demand under stationary and non-stationary settings. Contrary to classical inventory theory, we assume that no knowledge of demand is initially available, and lost sales in each period are unobservable. We take a non-parametric approach and propose adaptive inventory policies that generate a sequence of ordering decisio...

A Mathematical Method for Managing Inventories in a Dual Channel Supply Chain

The advent of e-commerce has prompted many manufacturers to redesign their traditional channel structure by engaging in direct sales. In this paper, we present a dual channel inventory model based on queuing theory in a manufacturer-retailer supply chain, consisting of a traditional retail channel and a direct channel which stocks are kept in both upper and lower echelon. The system receives ...
